Cool Things Coming Up

So many cool things are coming soon (and some even to a theatre near me!).

7 May - Free Comic Book Day! I won't link to it because when I view the page it keeps asking for my password and then won't cancel. Hmm.

19 May - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It's Star Wars, it completes the saga, what else is there to say?

29 May - our 2nd annual spring dog party in Nanaimo.

16 July - Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I am looking forward to it, but hopefully it is shorter and better edited than the last one.

30 September - Serenity, the movie based on the sadly short lived TV show Firefly. Download iTunes and view the trailer.

18 November - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire release date. Finally!

Also, somewhere in there I have final exams (written and cooking), start and finish my work experience, then graduate (2 September, I think)

Coming and Going (RIP Kagome Mouse)

Selena got 2 new mice this weekend. A brown one named Kongna and a black one named Songo.

Unfortunately, one of the white & brown ones, Kagome, appears to have been killed by the other mice last night. Perhaps she was sick? I know that Kagira (the mouse formerly named Kome and/or Squeaker) did seem to pick on her quite a bit.

Hopefully the remaining mice will get along and I won't continue to have a mouse morgue in the freezer.

Now I've Seen it All

Hasbro and Lucasfilm have united to bring out one of the most bizarre toys since the JarJar extending tongue sucker. It's Darth Tater!

//shrug// Kind of cute actually. How cool would that have been to have Mr Potato Head in Toy Story whip out his Darth Tater disguise to take on the Evil Zurg? //laughs hysterically// [ed note: yes, it has been a l-o-n-g day]

You Know You are Living in 2005 When

1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3.

4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.

6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.

7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.

8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

10. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.

11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. :)

12. You're reading this and nodding and laughing.

13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

14. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

15. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a #9 on this list.

AND NOW YOU'RE LAUGHING at yourself. Go on, forward this to your friends... you know you want to!

Found at DD Sez. Check this one out, full of great grammar/spelling rants (nice to know I'm not the only one!).

Recipe #2 - Bacon Wrapped Eggs

I got this recipe from the April 2005 issue of Bon Appetit. The picture makes it look SO yummy.

Bacon Wrapped Baked Eggs with Polenta

Polenta
2 T butter
1/4 c minced green onions
3 c water
1 t salt
1 c polenta
1/2 c (packed) grated Parmesan cheese
1 T minced fresh thyme

Baked Eggs
20 slices smoked bacon

6 oz extra sharp white cheddar, grated
6 oz Gruyere, grated

8 large eggs
1/4 c thinly sliced green onions
1 t minced fresh thyme

Method for Polenta
melt butter in medium saucepan, medium heat
add green onions, stir until wilted (approx 1 min)
add 3 c water & salt, bring to boil
gradually whish in polenta, bring to boil
reduce heat to low, simmer until thick and creamy
stir occasionally (about 13 min)
stir in cheese & thyme, salt & pepper
cool to lukewarm
* can be prepared up to 2 days ahead

Method for Baked Eggs
heat large skillet over medium heat
add bacon, fry until beginning to brown
drain on paper towels, cool slightly

line sides of 8 1 1/4 cup custard cups with 2 slices of bacon each, forming a collar
place 1/2 slice bacon on bottom of each cup
divide polenta in each cup, about 1/3 c each
press polenta over bottom and up sides of bacon
mix cheeses, sprinkle 1/2 cup over polenta in each cup

preheat oven to 400 F
crack one egg in the centre of each cup
sprinkle eggs with remaining cheese, green onions, thyme and black pepper
transfer cups to rimmed baking sheet
bake until egg whites are almost set, about 20 min
let eggs stand at room temp for 5 min (eggs will continue to cook)

run small sharp knife around edges, tilt cups and slide onto plates
