Calling it Quits

Regular readers may remember my rants about lack of hours at my assorted jobs this winter. Well, things still haven't changed much. I have been picking up more hours at Bistro but had less hours at Merridale (like 20 in 2 weeks!).

On the up side, the one coworker who really drove me crazy had his last day on Saturday. He's a nice kid, but in a business that overflows with control freaks, he's in a class of his own. Also just 19 and it was really hard for me to deal with being patronized by someone almost the same age as one of my kids. Grrr!

On the down side, his replacement got all his hours, so I still wasn't going to get more that 25 or 30 a week during the busy summer season. I decided that I could get that at Bistro (and probably a lot more) without a 25 min drive. So I talked to Fatima and she said she will keep me busy, then I handed in my notice today.

I was actually very diplomatic and blamed it on needing to spend more time with my kids. Which I do and which I will have time to do now. I do feel bad because the folks at Merridale are really nice but the double shifting just to have basic bill money was getting to be too much. As it is, today was shift 9 in 7 days, only 4 hours but still including the driving a days work. As far as I can tell I still have about 6 or 7 more days between both places until a day off. Good thing I really love what I do!! Also my final cheque will be decent and make up for the stupid Rogers bill I just paid (they screwed up last month, so this month was a double bill - ack!).

Remotely Annoying

Yes, we have misplaced our remote again! The main problem being that it is the special remote for digital cable box. It's been missing for about 2 weeks now and it's driving me insane because we have looked in all the usual places (and quite a few unusual places). sigh. We did find one battery about a week ago so I can only conclude that the dogs ate it. Off to Ebay now to see if there are any there. . .

Cooking by Gits

So I've been playing around with Pakistani/Indian style dessert sweets this week. My first attempt at gulab jamun (little fried balls of powdered milk in sugar syrup) resulted in a HUGE sticky mess in the deep fryer. My second attempt was marginally better, the balls stayed together but were hard as rocks. They did soften a bit when I cut them in half and left them in the syrup overnight. sigh.

Anyway, I decided to cheat and buy a packet of gulab jamun mix at Superstore. When I got it home and read the box I discovered it was made by Gits. Or for Gits possibly. I thought it must be like "Indian Desserts for Dummies". The cheater batch is a vast improvement over the homemade one, although I discovered reading the packet that in my first 2 attempts I had made the balls WAY too big.
